    Thou Shalt Not Kill

"Thou shalt not kill", as we all know, is one of the ten commandments of God. This has been stated in Exodus 20:13 and has been reiterated in Matthew 5:21,
21Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

However, atheists claim that God himself is guilty of this law. God killed people during the Great Flood, He killed during the destruction of cities such as Sodom and Gomorrah, and there are a lot of events in the Bible that God had to kill people. But atheists are mistaken because they took "though shalt not kill" literally. I'm not familiar with the Hebrew translations and stuff, but from what I understand, the sixth commandment means "Do not put anyone to death without cause." To better understand the 6th commandment, please visit Biblestudy.org. Anyway, it is true that God killed people, but I still believe that He did it because He had a cause. Godandscience.org answers the question, Thou Shalt Not Kill: Does God violate His own commandment?

Though this law seems easy to abide assuming we are all sane here we still tend to disobey it because some do not understand the command completely. "Thou shalt not kill" does not only mean "Do not kill fellow men"; but it also means "Preserve Life". With that said, I say NO to abortion, NO to euthanasia, and NO to pollution.

But what makes man choose to kill or not to preserve life? Well I need not discuss all the 7 deadly sins. But there's one thing that almost everybody loves so much that sometimes they tend to love it more then Jesus. Money, money, money. According to a recent article in Planet Ark, plantation workers chose to kill endangered orangutans (note: hands cut off and slashed to death with machetes, and others with bullets through their foreheads) rather than putting up a fence or a snare to prevent these apes from stealing their crops just because they said it is cheaper to kill them. This clearly shows how man chose money over the will of God.

To end, you may ask yourself,  "Is killing a mosquito or a cockroach disobeying God's commandment?" Well answer first why those pests are there in the first place.

    Sincere Love is Humble

5Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
       "God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble." (1 Peter 5:5)

Pride refers to a strong sense of self-respect, a refusal to be humiliated as well as joy in the accomplishments of oneself or a person, group, or object that one identifies with. In Christianity, pride (also vanity or arrogance) is the essentially competitive and excessive belief in one's own abilities that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God, or the worth which God sees in others; for example, Psalm 10 verse 4:

    4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him;
in all his thoughts there is no room for God.

    Kinds of Pride

    1. Pride of Mind and Intellect
    2. Pride of Race
    3. Pride of Rank and Power
    4. Pride of Nation
    5. Spiritual Pride

I know that most people think that I am very proud of myself. I think so too. I also know that I am proud of my achievements, my intellect, my country, and my race; but I have learned that these are things that are just borrowed from God. So instead of being proud of myself, I would be proud of my God.

Now you might think that it would still fall under spiritual pride (which in my opinion is the worst kind of pride). But being proud of Jesus does not fall under this kind. Spiritual pride refers to people who believes that they are better than others because of their religion or spirituality. As an example, "I am better than you because I am Christian and you are not." Or, "Why would I listen to someone who doesn't even believe in God." Some Christians, unfortunately, act this way. And this causes negative impression to all Christians. Although I believe their intention is to glorify God, but the way they do it, for me, is wrong. Jesus calls this type of people as hypocrites.

    Manifestations of Pride

    • Complaining against or passing judgment on God
    • A lack of gratitude in general
    • Being consumed on what others think
    • A lack of service
    • A lack of compassion

Have time to think and contemplate. Are you free from pride? I did, but I'm not free from all my pride yet. But I'm working on it. God bless!

    Omniscience of God

Last month, I shared about the omnipresence of God (GODISNOWHERE); He is always with us anytime, anyplace. Today let me share with you about the omniscience of God I just learned in today's service in Christ Christian Fellowship (CCF). Psalm 139:1-6 describes how omniscient God is:

1O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising,
thou understandest my thought afar off.
3Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
4For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
5Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
    6
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

From the passage above, we can say that God is omniscient because:
    1. God knows everything perfectly
    2. God knows you intimately
    3. God knows what's best for you
And who can say that there is someone who knows more than God? Or at least who can say he knows everything? Nobody can compare to God and nobody can read the mind of the Lord because of His infinite wisdom.
33O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

34For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
    (Romans 11:33-34)

    God Knows Everything Perfectly

23this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God,
you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. (
    Acts 2:23)

Predetermined. Foreknowledge. These words indicate that God also knows the future. He knows everything that will happen. He lives in the past, in the present, and in the future. I know it is probably stupid to mix science with faith, but I can't help but wonder about Einstein's time theory. He said, "There is no difference between the past and the future in the 4-dimensional space-time-world. The present is only an illusion." Time is an illusion. I am not an expert on that topic, but from what I understand, 1 second here is not the same as 1 second in space. Even on sci-fi movies or novels, we can say that 1 second in space is probably a day or more in Earth.

Since God is omnipresent, He can be in a very very far off place - too far in space that is too unimaginable by man. So God's second there can probably see the past, present, and future here on Earth. Anyway, I'm already mixing science here, but Einstein's theory is just an interesting thing to think about.

Although one could argue that if God knows everything, why did He give man his own will? Well I believe that God does not make mistakes. He knows that man's will can choose to go against His will, but He took the risk because He loves us too much that He wants to mold us and He wants us to learn how to love Him as compared to creating puppets that will love Him just because He wanted to.

    God Knows You Intimately

Have you ever experienced someone betraying you? Or have you judged someone because of their immoralities or sins that you never expected them to do?

Back in college, I had a friend who I get along with very easy. We both like sports, we both like eating, we both like studying, we both like talking about girls, and we even both like to serve or give something back to our community so we both ran for student council. Unfortunately, he wasn't the friend I expected in work - he prioritized his girlfriend more, he rarely attends our meetings, and he leaves me (and my co-representatives) in the middle of a project. It got so out of hand, that we ended up fighting and say, "If only I knew he was like that, I wouldn't have asked him to run for council (since I invited him to run as well when I decided to run)."

But God knows our thoughts, God knows our ways, God knows everything about us, but He would never utter the same thing I said to my old friend, or something similar. God loves us despite our sins. He knows us and He loves us.

Again, one can argue that if God knows us, why does He makes us suffer? Well, most sufferings are man-made. So it is not correct to blame God for it. I used to blame God when my dad lost his job back in January 2006 (and he never got one ever since) and left our family in hunger and in poverty for 3-4 months. Now that I look back to it, it was my Dad's fault; and I have to thank God for molding me into a person I am now, enabling me to win awards with cash incentives and providing me a superb job that pays me well to support my whole family.

God Knows What's Best for You

God knows the future and we don't. So He knows what's best for us, and we don't. We are blinded, most of the time, by the things we want (like money, power, or short-term goals) and that usually becomes our measure of saying that something is good for us. We don't even know ourselves completely to know what is really good for us.

Right now, I am ill with varicocele and I don't know what to do. I'll keep to myself what God's trying to say to me, but I know this helped me get to know Him more, and it also helped me to become a better person for me and for everyone else. I also know that He has plans for my future.

23Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)

    Laughter is the Best Medicine

For the past 3 weeks, I've been a gloomy Geo. I couldn't eat well, I couldn't work out, I couldn't go out much, and I couldn't relax thanks to the everyday dull aches my balls are giving me. Even my friends are saying that I've become skinny and pale. Unfortunately, this will go on for the next 3 or 4 weeks as I am under observation. I could then go for an elective surgery if the pain is too bothersome.

I do appreciate the simple hi's, hello's and how are you's may it be online or face-to-face; but I just love when they make me laugh. After all, laughter is the best medicine. Ok, although there is a neurophysiology behind laughter, it still won't cure my varicocele. But at least it does make me feel good and makes me forget about the pain I'm having constantly.

I have to thank my silly friends for always trying to make me laugh these past few days. JB Tan did it by making pacute lagi on YM and we ended up talking about how fat he is. Ia Lucero made me laugh when we were exchanging intellectual messages on blogging and we, or I rather, ended up being bullied in an atheist blog. While most of my friends teased that I have STD - it wasn't funny, but I know their intention was to make me laugh. But my most favorite of all was Carlos Lasa's facewarp application in his mobile phone. He takes pictures of people and warps it into funny, unimaginable, and weird faces.

This is just a warped face of Mela Sogono taken by Carlos Lasa

Hilarious. That picture always makes me Laugh.Out.Loud. I even saved it in my phone so I can always look at it and laugh at it. I also saved the Facewarp application in my Nokia N70 to take more warped faces of my friends.

The Balls to Check Your Balls

Two weeks ago while working out, I was bothered by a dull ache on my testicles. So after working out, I did a self-examination in the shower to check if I feel hard bumps on my balls. I don't really know how to do it, but I thought it was somehow similar to Sariling Salat sa Suso advertisement back when I was a kid. Basic check: are there any hard bumps? NONE.

But after a few days, I was still feeling that dull ache and it was really getting bothersome. I had no choice but to go to our clinic. It was really embarassing at first (since our Doctor is a girl), but I had to do it. Based from the description I told her, she thought it was hernia; also because I work out without wearing a supporter. But she advised me to go see a specialist - a urologist.

So I went to Makati Medical Center to see Dr. Stephen Nazareth. He asked me to pull down my pants; he took a look at my balls, touched it, and squeezed it a bit while asking me to cough. He then said, "This is not Hernia." Pheeeww. I had a sigh of relief back there, BUT he wanted to take more look at it. No, he didn't ask me to pull down my pants again. He asked me to schedule for a scrotal ultrasound. So I did; here's an ultrasound image of my testicles. The result was varicocele bilateral.

So what is it? Varicocele is an abnormal enlargement of the veins in the scrotum draining the testicles (Wikipedia). To make me feel not so bad:

Although they don't happen to every guy, varicoceles are fairly common. They appear in about 15% of guys between 15 and 25 years old, and they mostly occur during puberty. (Teenshealth)

Guess I'm part of the 15%... and unfortunately, there is no way to prevent a varicocele; it usually needs no special treatment. So I just need to endure the dull aches that I might be having once in a while. Poor me....

And for those of you who are wondering, I still have the ability to impregnate. Though some experts believe that varicocele might damage the testicle or decrease sperm production. But if that's the case, I can go for a surgery. Oh noes!

    Geo's Dog Day

The Philippines Animal Welfare Society's Kids and Critters Summer Camp (for kids with dogs!) was held today, 06 May 2007, in Eastwood City, Libis. Registration started around 2:30 PM where doglovers from all over Manila gathered and boasted their pet's beauty and skills.

The event officially started 3:45PM. It started off with a round of introduction of the dogs and their owners. There were a lot of dogs with different sizes, different colors, and of course, different breeds. There were hairy shitzus, lean spitzs, German shnauzers, cute poodles, and other breeds that I don't even know. My personal favorite among all the dogs in the event, was the rare Shiba Ino. It is a brown-orange dog that looks like a wolf. I would like to have a Shiba Ino someday.

It was then followed with a series of sessions. The first one taught the kids how to make balloon poodle hats. The second one talked about how to properly walk your dog. So when walking your dog, you should control it; not the dog controlling you. Some tips when walking your dog:
    1. Use a lure (they used dog biscuits shaped like a hotdog) to do the behavior that we want to teach the dog, like following you when you walk.
    2. Make it a happy walk, and not a boring walk. When the dog does something good, praise him with a loud voice. Dog detects enthusiasm from its owner.
    3. Don't hold the leash tight, let it loose. And if the dog goes ahead of you, just stop. Remember that you don't want the dog to be controlling the walk and it shouldn't be pulling you where it wants to go.
After the walking the dog session, the participants paraded on the stage demonstrating how they walk their dogs. Fortunately, 80% of the participants were able to control their dogs.

The third session was an arts and crafts session. The kids get to sew (yes, even the little boys got to sew) their mats. They decorated it for their cute doggies doggie bowl.

The fourth session was a cooking session. They were taught how to make "pawcakes" - a doggie version of the famous pancakes. You cook it like a pancake, but the difference is on the ingredients. The secret ingredient, aside from dog food, is crumbled eggshells. Eggshells contain a lot of calcium and your dog needs this to balance phosphorous that dogs get by eating meat most of the time. Eggshells also help clean your dog's teeth. Oh, and don't forget to put the toppings on your pawcakes - liver with raw eggs.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

    "Paw"cake

The fifth and last session was about taking care of your dog's health. Dr. Ed, the veterinarian, taught the kids how to check if their dog is obese. You can check if your dog is fat by feeling its last rib and feeling its spine. If you can't feel it, then it's probable that your dog is obese. Also, another fun way of checking if your dog is obese is by placing a plastic cup or glass on your dog's back (make sure the plastic cup is appropriate for your dog's size). If the cup doesn't fall, then the dog might be obese.

Dr. Ed also taught how to get your dog's heartrate. Since the dog is moving all the time, you can just get his heart in 10 sec and just multiply it by 10. You can hear your dog's heartbeat on its left underarm. Big dogs have 60-80 beats/min heartrate, while small dogs have 100-120 beats/min.

Dr. Ed lastly taught how to clean your dog's ears. It's better to clean your dog's ears before giving it a bath. Put a drop of mineral oil on the dog's ears and gently massage the ear then go inside the hole with your pinky. Once done, the dog will automatically shake (yes, the dog did shake after the demonstration) to remove the oil, but you can still wipe it off.

The event ended with a relay game where the kids and their critters ran around the stage doing things together. It's a wonderful thing to see - man and beast working together to reach a specific goal.

Btw, I went to eastwood to work because there's free wifi within the vicinity. But I ended up watching the doggie event and even ended up writing about it. Yay. I don't like pets, but seeing a lot of nice doggies made me want to have one.

Oh, and there were cats in the event too... but nobody seems to want them. Poor pussies

    Reduce.Reuse.Recycle.Respond.

Pollution is a major and growing issue in our planet especially in a developing country like ours. Not only because our population is so big but also we, Filipinos, have a tendency to be lazy. Big population equals more wastes; being lazy equals poor waste management. How we leave our trash after eating in a cafeteria or a restaurant alone shows how lazy and dirty we are. I too am guilty of this act (especially when I'm in a developed country), but I am more aware now and starting to keep my own trash.

But don't worry, we're not the worst when it comes to pollution; it is everyone's problem - it is the whole world's problem! Thank goodness there are kindred spirits who still care and fights for a clean and better future. Thank you for Captain Planet and the Planeteers! Haha. Kidding aside, we have a number of planeteers all over the planet, and we do have them here in the Philippines. We have a lot of researches, activities, organizations, and projects to promote proper waste management which you can easily search on the web. They all teach and use the basics of waste management called the 3Rs. RecycleThis.org is a good and friendly website to know and understand the 3Rs. Not to mention they added up a 4th R, which I think is very important:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

    Step 1: Reduce
    Step 2: Reuse
    Step 3: Recycle
    What's left? Respond

Under the 4th R, we can have a lot of options. Others call it Rethink while others, although it doesn't start with an R, call it Compost. But whatever they call it, they all responded after the 3Rs. What I like the most, however, is Convert. Converting our waste products into a completely different product. One simple but creative example is the clean conversion they did in South Africa. They converted shipping containers into buildings such as a school building. This is very innovative as education is also a problem in South Africa.

In the Philippines, we have a quest for zero garbage as exemplified by a recycling advocate, Luz Sabas. We have also started to convert plastic into usable products led by The Philippine Plastic Industry Association (PPIA) and the Department of Science and Technology (DoST). We also have a BIOpro plant in Muntinlupa which provides engineered solutions for laundry wastes, hospital wastes, animal waste, palm oil mill waste, etc. However, few actions by few people will not resolve everyone's problem. I hope all Filipinos (as well as other races) will contribute and cooperate on saving our planet.

    Let's all be a planeteer!

    Geo's defect... Oh noes!

    , you're now logged in!
Below you'll find your test result. After, continue on to your homescreen to discover what we're about.
    Class Clown
You are the Class Clown. This means you wear grease paint and have a big, red nose...

I really need to stop thinking so literally...

Anyway, I MEANT to say that you are the Class Clown, and this means that you are extroverted, mean, and arrogant. You are not very rational, so you gravitate towards things that produce feelings or emotions over thoughts (like fart jokes or spitballs, for instance). You are also an extrovert and rather full of yourself, so of course you want constant attention for yourself and think you are somehow better than others. (Upon hearing the expression "you are full of yourself", you probably also slyly feel the need to ask women if they would like to be "full of yourself" too. I am assuming you have a penis. I often make that assumption, being fond of the penis.) You can also be a bit mean-spirited, and like a class clown you wouldn't hesitate to make a joke at someone else's expense, no matter how terrible it would make them feel. A lot of people probably find your antics annoying, sophomoric, and desperately histrionic. Like some sort of crack-taking hyperactive monkey, you'd do anything, mock anyone, just to get someone to pay attention to you for five seconds. So your personality defects are that you have to be the center of attention, that you don't care about others, and that you are rather irrational and motivated by intuitions. Now stop walking around with those books on your head and sit down this instant! Or else I'll be forced to stand here, hands on my hips, doing nothing once again!

    To put it less negatively:

    1. You are more INTUITIVE than rational.

    2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted.

    3. You are more BRUTAL than gentle.

    4. You are more ARROGANT than humble.

    Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Robot.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Schoolyard Bully, the Smartass, and the Brute.

    Race to the Finish Line

And the crowd was cheering loudly as the Mt. Everest superstar, Romy Garduce, in bright pink shirt sprinted halfway around the Ultra Track Oval and up towards the bleachers to perform his arduous task as the torchbearer. Upon reaching the top, he raised his hands just like the way he did when he reached Mt. Everest's summit. The crowd cheered louder as the torchbearer finally lit the cauldron, officially starting the sportsfest called the P&G Summer Showdown.

"Ready!" I positioned myself at the leftmost part of the track.

"Set!" I lowered my body, ready anytime to sprint.

"GO!" I ran. The first part of the event, the open-to-all-1.5km-fun-run, started. I ran.

It was around 2pm and the sun was high above the sky, striking all its rays straight down on everyone. It seems like Mr. Sun was having a competition with Mr. North Wind again. But it didn't stop me nor any of the runners from participating the fun run. But it did prevent most of the runners to finish the race.

So I ran the race in 10 minutes and I was one of the first 10 runners to reach the finish line. "Whooo!" my teammates cheered for the first runner in our team to finish. However, as I went to our tent with weary feet and a pounding heart, I started to feel nauseous. I sat down, drank some water, and munched some crackers.

My head started spinning. I tried to get a grip and focus.

It spun heavily. I stood up.

Darkness started to creep up my head, slowly consuming my vision. But before it completely took my sight, I reached out to the person closest and whimpered, "Nahihilo ako..." And then it was complete darkness. I couldn't see but I could barely hear a voice saying, "Geo! Geo!". The voice helped me maintain my consciousness. I felt like a flower wilting as my ability to stand up was also slowly taken away. I was then carried. Carried up the stage so everyone can see the weak, pale, and dying Geo. Funny I felt embarassed even though I couldn't see anything.

I was a blind spirit who couldn't feel his body anymore but could still hear some noise. The lone spirit listened and waited. Listened. Waited. A cool breeze blew in. Relaxing. Soothing. Energizing.

And there was light (So that was the feeling of a newlyborn who could finally see). And just like a newlyborn, I could clearly remember the first faces that I saw; my "MOM" and "DAD" was the torchbearer Romy Garduce and the basketball analyst Anthony Suntay. And I heard these two also carried me up the stage to get more air and positioned me such that my blood can circulate better. So thank you Mom and Dad! But of course, I have to thank all the people who helped me - the guy who gave me Gatorade, the nurse who took my Blood Pressure, the HR manager who fanned, etc. Thank you!

What I learned from this experience? DO NOT RUN WHEN YOUR STOMACH IS EMPTY. I literally had an empty stomach - no breakfast and no lunch! Stupid.

    GODISNOWHERE

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Did you read it as: GOD IS NOWHERE or GOD IS NOW HERE?

It depends upon your perspective; but I hope you've interpreted it as the latter one - GOD IS NOW HERE. Yes. God is now here on Geo's space. God is with me, God is with you and God is with us - God is everywhere.

23"Am I only a God nearby," declares the Lord,"and not a God far away?
24Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?" declares the Lord.
"Do not I fill the heaven and earth?" declares the Lord. (
    Jeremiah 23:23-24)

We should learn to live our lives with His presence and knowing and doing what is right will be easy
. For example, imagine you are in a very very VERY tempting situation. Tempting, meaning, it is very easy to sin. And imagine someone you really like and respect to be with you in that situation. Now imagine what would you have done in that situation? Would you act differently if that important person wasn't around?

Let's say you had a very bad day and you were walking alone on the streets when a stranger accidentally bumped you. Would you cuss that person? To be honest, maybe I will. Now what if your special someone is walking with you that time? It could be your boss (and you're aiming for a promotion) or your date (and you really really like her). Would that change your reaction when that stranger bumped you? Would you still cuss that person? I won't.

So the point is, if you live your life and you're conscious that God is always with you, it will help you think twice before sinning. Doing the right thing would be much easier. You wouldn't sin in front of someone really important to you. What more if you're conscious that you will be sinning in front of God. God can see everything. You cannot hide from Him.

    4Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

    (
    Psalm 23:4)

God gives comfort. He is not there watching at you to give discomfort and insecurities. He is there to protect you and to guide you. Knowing and accepting God in your life releases you from your fears and worries. I used to be a man who knows God, but did not accept God into my life. Meaning, God was just a concept to me before. And I can say that I used to live in constant fear and worry. I worried what others thinks about me, I worried about my grades, I worried about winning, I worried about money, I worried about anything that involves me. Yes, I did achieve a lot of things but it was really hard and stressful worrying about practically everything.

Now that I know God, I became less of a worrier. Yes I still worry, but everytime I worry I just ask myself 'WHY?' and then I pray (He is not a distant father. Just close your eyes, call Him, and talk to Him). I remember when I was going to Toronto last February, and the night before my flight, I still don't have my visa. My colleagues and my friends told me that it will not arrive. But what did I do? I went to Gateway and bought my winter clothes. Why? Because I prayed to God nights before and He told me that my visa will arrive. So I just waited and did not worry about it. Lo and behold, the morning before my flight, our travel agent called and told me that I can pick up my visa in their office. Saved me a lot of wrinkles and sleepless nights.

I hope the next time you read the title, it will be 'GOD IS NOW HERE'. And I hope you'll also live your life with God. Only He can save us.

3 New Species found in the Philippines!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
New pokemon species were found in the Philippines last year. Two - a parrot and a mouse - were found in the smallest island of Camiguin (of which there are 7,000, known to support a bird or mammal species that is endemic) and the other one - a dwarf buffalo - was found in Cebu. However, the dwarf buffalo is already extinct.

The parrot is called Colasisi. It is a bright-green hanging-parrot with throat and thighs bright blue, and the top of the head and tail are brilliant scarlet-orange. Males and females have identical plumage, which is quite unusual in this group of parrots.

The mouse is known as Apomys camiguinensis. It is a Philippine forest mouse with large ears and eyes, a long tail and rusty-brown fur, and feeds mostly on insects and seeds. The description is based on mice captured on Camiguin during a biological survey Heaney and Tabaranza conducted in 1994 and 1995, high on the steep slopes of one of the island's volcanoes.

"The Philippines is increasingly recognized as a global center for biodiversity, with exceptionally high levels of endemism," said Blas Tabaranza Jr., Director of the Terrestrial Ecosystems Project of the Haribon Foundation, a Philippine conservation NGO based in Manila, and a co-author of several of the Fieldiana reports. "Unfortunately, the Philippines has also vaulted into notoriety as one of the most severely deforested tropical countries in the world." (EurekAlert April 5, 2007)

    The dwarf buffalo Bubalus cebuensis
(BOO-buh-luhs seh-boo-EN-sis), however, is already extinct. Its fossils were discovered by Michael Armas 50 years ago in a tunnel he was excavating while exploring for phosphate. His friend Dr. Hamilcar Intengan recognized the importance of these bones and donated them to The Field Museum. Its most distinctive feature is its small size. While large domestic water buffalo stand six feet at the shoulder and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, B. cebuensis would have stood only two-and-one-half feet and weighed about 350 pounds.

The discovery demonstrates that there are fossils to be found in the Philippines, which rarely produces fossils due to its hot, wet conditions, which are not conducive to fossil preservation. Only a few fossils of elephants, rhinos, pig, and deer have been found previously, according to Dr. Angel Bautista, a co-author of the study and curator of anthropology at the National Museum of the Philippines in Manila. "Finding this new species is a great event in the Philippines," he said. "We have wonderful living biodiversity, but we have known very little about our extinct species from long ago. Finding this new fossil species will spur us to new efforts to document the prehistory of our island nation." (EurekAlert Oct. 17, 2007)

    Ramgee_Lobos, Forever Offline

Today, I can't access my Yahoo! accounts. I tried changing the password or recovering it but I just couldn't. I'm not sure if I got hacked or I got a virus on my yahoo account.

Background: Last night, my yahoo account had been sending a lot of spam messages to all my contacts. Might be a virus.

So this is to inform you that cancer_6eo9 and ramgee_lobos IDs do not work anymore. Or if you receive a message from those accounts, that is not me. Someone who has nothing to do with his life except for sleeping, pigging out, playing computer games, or playing with his IT hacking tool is just having some fun with my poor old Yahoo! accounts. Whoever that was I just pray that he'll never do it again and do not commit more sin. God has His reasons why these things happen. Maybe this is just a lesson for me as well.

Thanks for understanding. Let me know if you're getting messages from those IDs. [Hope you don't receive any.]

Then again, it's flattering that someone took that much effort just to hack my accounts. It's like waving a BIG RED FLAG just to say "Hey Geo, I'm here! I'm HERE!" [But still, it could just be a virus. Poor Geo, even a virus is head-over-heels on your manhood. Rawwrrrr!]

By the way, I'm getting a new Yahoo! ID. Message me privately if you want to know it. From now on, my Yahoo! account is private. [Yeah right, your body pics are public but your Yahoo! ID isn't.]

UP Parser now ONLINE! ... again

We have left a lot when we graduated - our projects, our missions, and our visions in our organizations. It was really disappointing at first that some of our projects are not implemented this year. But hey, they have their own projects, their own missions, and their own visions. I am already an alumnus, so I should let go and trust the people that we left.

UP Parser is one of the organizations that I left. And I was, to be honest, really disappointed that they couldn't release an issue last year. But this year, they managed to release one. And they also managed to publish the paper online. Please visit UP PARSER ONLINE.

And don't forget to read this article.

    After 8 months!

I've been working out already for 8 months... and this is what I got:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

My muscles grew 1-2 inches on the average (biceps, triceps, etc),

but my stomach got bigger by 1 inch because of body fat (3.2 % body fat)!

    Happy?

    NO.

People say I still look thin when I'm wearing a shirt. And I can't go to places topless just because I want them to know that I'm not the skinny Geo back in the school days anymore.

My target is to have a bigger body that people will finally say, "Laki ng katawan natin ah," even if I'm wearing some clothes.

And I still want to have those cool cuts on the back. I still don't have it... (more pull ups Geo!!!)

100 Things To Do Before I Die

Last year, our General Manager talked about Work-Life Balance. And one of the strategies he mentioned to have a good work-life balance is to create a list of the 100 things you want to do before you die and target to do at least 2 things a year.

I want to do that, but my problem is I don't even have a list to start. It is hard to create that list. So now I'm starting to make a list. I will update this post as often as I can. And it might take time - very long time - before I complete this list (I don't even blog regularly).

Note: If highlighted in GREEN, then I've already done it.

    1. Have a personal relationship with God - I know I was agnostic before but now I wanted to know Jesus personally. I have faith that there is life after this physical life, and I know it is better. I just don't know when I can say that I have a personal relationship with Him... I think I'll just know when it comes.
    2. Provide my mom, dad, and my siblings a better life - Better meaning a nice house for them and I can provide stable support financially. I don't want drama so I'll not go into detail here.
    3. Have a successful career in P&G - I'm happy in P&G and it is like second home to me already. I'm recognized, I'm paid well, and most of all I'm happy. I target to be in Band 3 the least.
    4. Have a loving wife and kids - I want to have a family of my own. I just don't know yet how old I want to get married. I'm still happy being single. But I want to get married with an american or a latina (I wish!). *wink* *wink*
    5. Have a great body - I want to be physically fit and healthy. One measure I think is to become a model. ^__^
    6. Learn at least 5 languages - I now know Tagalog and English. I know a bit of Japanese, French, and Spanish. I just need to get good at it. Italian sound interesting too.
    7. Buy my own car and learn to drive - I'm actually buying one this week. It's a 2nd hand 2005 Honda Civic VTI-S. But I still need to learn how to drive.
    8. Learn how to swim - I'm taking swimming lessons this month. I'm starting on Monday!
    9. Be a great fencing player - I did won the UAAP last 2006 but I stopped playing fencing when I started to work. How I wish I could go back and start playing again. Next time, I'll play for SEA games.
    10. Travel to at least 15 countries - I've been to Philippines, Japan, Singapore, California, and Canada. Lots of countries to go...
    11. Teach - I love teaching. Maybe because I love talking. And I love to coach and to mentor. I teach in P&G, I coached in fencing, and I taught back in college on group studies. Even when I was in elementary, my teacher asked me to teach the lower section classes during Teachers Day.
    12. Learn to Salsa - I'm not a dancer but I still want to learn how to dance at least one valid dance. So that when I go out of the country, I know one dance to make the girls fall for one hot latino (ahem.. that's me).
    13. Learn Aikido - I'm not a fighter but I want to be able to at least protect the person I love. Aikido would be the best offensive/defensive martial art. And I don't have to put so much effort... they say "use your enemy's force".
    14. Explore underwater - Dive! I want to go diving someday and explore the seafloor and the sea creatures. Besides, I'm Earth and Water (GeoMar) so I should know water as well.
    15. Start my own business - We currently have a commercial center in Cebu. I'm planning to develop it in the near future.
    16. Learn to cook - Cooking for your wife and kids, I bet, is such a delight. Of course, I have to serve them good food for it to be such a delight to them as well. I want to learn how to bake cakes as well.
    17. Learn to play a music instrument well - I play the piano, but I'm not that good. I want to learn to play a musical instrument very well. Guitar, Violin, Piano, Drums, or even Saxophone. It would be nice if I can play a good music for someone special in my life. Cheesy!
    18. Be a photographer - Since I travel a lot, I found photography to be an interesting hobby to complement my traveller's soul. I joined a photography club at work and I'm now starting to learn a few techniques. Although I still don't have a good camera to get really good pics... :(

    Relationships 101

This is the speech I gave to ARISE members and applicants last January 29, 2007 to equip them and motivate them to run for the UP Engineering Student Council (ESC) elections...

"Why would I run for a position in the ESC? Aren't we all here in school to study? So why waste time for such things like this?" Those we're the questions that ran in my mind when the previous CS representative Carlos Lasa asked me to run as a CS representative. Immediately, I answered him NO. And usually, when I say NO I really mean NO. But I'm not sure why Carlos insisted on asking me to run, so he asked me to attend just one talk in ARISE (Alliance of Responsive Involvement and Student Empowerment). So I agreed and attended that first talk.

The alumnus who gave a speech was Jonas Gonzales. He was well versed, good in public speaking, and a really fun and jolly person as well. He was really good - the style, the approach, and the content. It was him who made me decide to run. He said, "We're UP students. We're scholars. We have to give something back to the community...". It made me realize that I am such a selfish arrogant little nerd. I only cared about my grades, my grades, and my grades! I know I am good, so why can't I do something for the community? And so I decided to ran and continued to attend more talks in ARISE.

ARISE's core values are LIVES - Leadership, Integrity, Vision, Excellence, and Service. I'm not gonna tackle each one of those today, because I'm sure ARISE members will talk on those. But the question is, given all those values, can you do it alone? In my opinion, no. The secret to success, in the council for example, is your relationships.
Relationships is the glue that keeps team members together. In the council, teamwork is really important. So to succeed, you also need to have a solid relationships with your team members. To know if you have a good and solid relationship, these are 5 characteristics of relationship:
    1. Respect - Respect is about putting value on others. It is important in starting to build a relationship. Human relations author Les Giblin said, "You cannot make other feel important in your presence if you secretly feel that he or she is a nobody." It is true. In fact, the thing about respect is that you have to show before they do anything to warrant it. But at the sametime, expect that you have to earn other people's respect.
    2. Shared Experiences - Respect alone is not enough. How can you make relations with people if you don't know them. Shared experiences should be built overtime.
    3. Trust - If you have respect and shared experiences with someone, you are on your way on building a strong relationship. And to make it last long, you need trust. For me, it feels better to be trusted than to be loved. Because I believe that no relationship will last if there is no trust.
    4. Reciprocity - In relationships, there shouldn't always be a giver and a taker. Both persons should be a giver and a taker at the same time. This way, both parties will be happy and that will make your relationship enjoyable and longer.
    5. Mutual enjoyment - The thing that will make you know that you have really built a solid relationship is when your team are all happy. The fact that being together even in bad situations could even make positive results.

So as a candidate, you should start building your relationships. Not only within ARISE, but with your co-representatives, your Org leaders, the students, and even with the faculty.

Now why is it important. In your situation Relationships are important because:

    • Teamwork - Most if not all of your projects in the council will be a group effort. If you have a solid relationships with your team members, you will finish any project and deliver good results.
    • Election - Now why do people vote for their friends? It's because they know the person and they have a good relationship with that person. And the good thing about relationship is that it radiates. If you have a good relationship with one person, and that person has a good relationship with other persons, the tendency is that your friend will support you and vote for you, and they will even encourage their friends to vote and support you as well. And it goes on and on.
    • Volunteers - the hardest thing I experienced when I have projects is getting volunteers. But if you have good relationships with people, most likely they will help you. Remember that when leading a group of volunteers, you have nothing but your relationship with them to make them work. You're not paying them to work, are you? For ex, during my term, I have a good relationship with the people in the UP CS Network (UP Alliance of Computer Science Students). And the people in that network are the faculty, the leaders of the organizations, and the batch representatives. I moved those people with my relationship with them, and I know that they will move their members in their respective batches or organizations to help me on my project as well. In the end, we have done a lot of projects during my term. And I know I didn't do it alone, I did it with all the help I can get.

The next question would be, How to build relationships? Can you tell me how you're going to start building your relationships? The benefits of relationships are really priceless. But how? Can you give me some examples?

The secret lies with one of the letters in LIVES. And it is the I - the Integrity. It is your best friend. It will never betray you or put you in a compromising situation. For ex. if you're tempted to go take a shortcut, it will help you keep on the right course. If others criticize you unfairly, it will help you keep going and take the high road of not hitting back. And if others' criticisms are valid, it will help you accept what they say, learn from it, and keep growing.

Guess what, it is not only your best friend. But it is also one of the best friends your friends will ever have. Because if your friends know that you are a person of integrity, they know you have the opportunity to add values in their lifes. They will not have second thoughts on your motives. Building relationships will be easier with integrity.

In the end, you either bend your actions to your principles, or bend your principles to your actions. It's your choice. But if you want to successful, I suggest you take the road to integrity, because all other roads only lead to ruin. And if you choose to take the road to integrity, you have to go back to the fundamentals. I have 3 tips to help you:

    1. Commit yourself to honesty, reliability, and confidentiality
    2. Decide beforehand that you do not have a price
    3. Each day, do what you should do first before what you want to do
    Decide now.

The UP Department of Computer Science Holds Its First Alumni Homecoming

Twenty-six years since its creation, the UP Diliman Department of Computer Science (DCS) is finally holding an alumni homecoming on the 24th of February 2007 at its new home, the College of Engineering Library and Computer Science Building. (FYI, that building is right in front of National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) and the College of Science Library and Administration building.) Registration starts at 3, while the program will begin at 4pm.

You can read the invitation letter from Prof. Evangel Quiwa that’s been passed around to the alumni in Sir Rom’s blog. Actually, there are two more versions of the invitation letter: one reiterated by the Department Chair, Dr. Cedric Festin, and another detailing of a very special surprise for the Department’s most-loved teacher—guess who! (I’ve already mentioned him here!)

If you haven’t registered yet, better do it soon! Here are the latest details on registration and payment for the event (dated January 5):

    P 400.00 if reserved by the end of the year and paid by the end of January 2007;
    P 500.00 if bought by the end of January 2007;
P 600.00 if bought in February.

All you have to do is to reserve and to get the discounted rates (before February) is to send an e-mail to homecoming.register@updcsaa.com

…The tickets for the homecoming will be out late next week. For those who would like to pay prior to the release of the tickets, you have two options:

    (1) Direct payment to Mila Ramos at the CS Department
    (2) Bank deposit to Philippine National Bank
    Account Number: 275-830501-8
Account Name: Diliman Computer Science Foundation

Please email your name, number of tickets, date, amount and transaction number (first line of the machine validation) of the deposit slip to homecoming.register@updcsaa.com

Upon availability, tickets may be claimed from Mila Ramos during office hours at the CS Department. Alternatively, you can get it on the homecoming itself. In any case, you need to show the receipt for option (1) and deposit slip containing the transaction number for option (2).

For registration inquiries, please email homecoming.register@updcsaa.com

It’s barely been a year since we’ve stepped out of the Department, so it should still be relatively comfortable coming home. I can’t believe that just last year we were in a frenzy of events, from music video making (tara na, CS tayo!) to geeking out to newspaper publishing to partying and to excelling over and over again.

If you aren’t too excited about this event, realize at least that your Department will always be waiting for you to come home and give back.

UP Fencer, A Real Pinoy Fighter!

I got news from my old teammate that he joined the Real Pinoy Fighter by ABS-CBN. It's a reality game where fighters from different disciplines box, kick, or wrestle each other.
He's a fencer! But he joined the fight! Imagine a fencer fight these boxers, wrestlers, or whatever martial art you can think of!
    Kidding.
My teammate is also a judo player and a wrestler. I can still remember how he grapple or wrestle me during our practice. He really loves wrestling! So I'm proud and happy that finally, he's living his dream. Good luck to you bro and congratulations for making it to the final three. Whatever the result is, I'm sure you're very happy with the experience. But I still wish you become the champ!
    Walang kalimutan ha!
